Smart Trip Checklist
Day hike, overnight, winter, solo, family or car-kit templates with the modern Ten Essentials.
How the smart checklist works
A checklist is safety equipment. Forgetting the map is funny in the parking lot and dangerous at the wrong junction, so this tool builds the list from systems rather than memory.
From the classic list to ten systems
The Mountaineers’ classic Ten Essentials (first published in the 1970s as map, compass, sunglasses, extra food, extra clothes, headlamp, first-aid, fire, matches and knife) evolved into ten functional systems: navigation; sun protection; insulation and layers; illumination; first aid and health; fire; repair and tools; nutrition; hydration; and emergency shelter with signalling. Systems thinking survives gear changes — a downloaded phone map still belongs to navigation, and a satellite messenger is still signalling.
Template and party adaptation
Each template starts from the same ten systems and then applies rules. The day-hike list is minimal but complete; overnight and multi-day templates add meals, shelter accounting and treatment; winter adds insulation margin, traction, and beacon–probe–shovel only where terrain and training justify them, plus reminders that water freezes and batteries die early. The solo template stresses a registered PLB or satellite messenger carried on the body. The family template adds a complete spare layer set per child, kid-sized whistle and lamp, familiar snacks and a small comfort item. The car kit template, gated by a vehicle checkbox, adds jumper cables, reflective triangles and hi-vis vest, tow strap, ice scraper, and water and blankets for all passengers. Quantities such as water (≥2 L per person), headlamps and space blankets scale to party size from 1 to 12.
Progress, shared gear and the trailhead ritual
Packed progress is simply:
progress % = checked items ÷ total items × 100
Ticks persist per template in this browser with no account, so a list can be packed over several evenings. The shared-gear table — tent, stove and fuel, group first-aid kit, water treatment, repair kit — records who carries each one. Print the completed list, lay the gear on it at the tailgate, and finish the other half of the ritual: file the Emergency Trip Plan with someone who will actually call for help when the check-in deadline passes.
