How the pack weight analyzer works
Backpackers argue about ounces because ounces turn into knee pain, blisters and slower miles. The analyzer turns a pile of gear into the same weight language used by long-distance hikers and the outdoor industry.
The skin-out accounting system
Every item is weighed in grams and assigned a status. Base weight is the gear carried in the pack that comes home — pack, shelter, sleep system, kitchen, spare layers and small essentials — with everything consumed removed. Worn weight is clothing and gear on the body at the trailhead (hiking clothes, boots, hat, poles carried in the hands). Consumables are food, water and fuel, which literally vanish along the route. The arithmetic is deliberately simple:
total skin-out = base + worn + consumables
base = Σ carried items (excluding worn & consumables)
This separation is why base weight is comparable between a two-day overnight and a five-day thru-hike section: only consumables change with itinerary length.
Grades and the body-weight ratio
Base-weight bands follow common long-distance usage: under 10 lb (4.54 kg) is ultralight, 10–20 lb (4.54–9.07 kg) is lightweight, and above 20 lb (9.07 kg) is traditional. Separately the tool computes:
load ratio = total skin-out ÷ body weight × 100%
A ratio over 20% raises a caution flag; over 25% it flags danger for rugged terrain or big mileage. Loaded- march studies and pack-fit guidance converge near that zone — fit and training help, but they do not repeal the physics of every step lifting the same mass.
The category donut and shakedown logic
Base weight is split into six categories (shelter, sleep, pack, kitchen, clothing, misc) and drawn as a conic-gradient donut so the heaviest target is obvious. Most traditional kits lose their first kilograms in the same order: share a tent or move to a tarp-compatible shelter, replace the 2 kg pack after the load shrinks, shrink the kitchen to one pot and one stove, and apply the layered-clothing system instead of “just in case” extras. The sample kit and JSON export exist so the list survives between trips: re-weigh when gear changes, print for a shakedown weekend, and keep safety items — navigation, insulation, first aid and signalling — even while chasing the ultralight line.
