How the backpacking calorie calculator works
Walking with a heavy pack up rough ground is one of the most energetically expensive things a healthy person can do. This planner does not guess from step counts: it uses a load-carriage model validated in a military physiology laboratory.
The core equation comes from Pandolf, Givoni and Goldman, “Predicting energy expenditure with loads while standing or walking very slowly,” Journal of Applied Physiology 43(4):577–581, 1977 (DOI 10.1152/jappl.1977.43.4.577). With body mass W and load mass L in kilograms, walking speed V in metres per second, average grade G in percent, and a terrain factor η, the mechanical-plus-metabolic power while walking is modelled as:
P = 1.5·W + 2.0·(W + L)·(L/W)² + η·(W + L)·(1.5·V² + 0.35·V·|G + 6|) (watts)
From watts to dinner
Power multiplied by moving seconds and divided by the mechanical equivalent of 4,184 joules per kilocalorie gives exercise energy: kcalwalk = P · t ÷ 4184. Resting metabolism during the same hours adds about 1.25 · W · hours · 0.86 kcal. The two terms sum to the daily total and repeat for every trip day. Grade is derived from your climb divided by distance — the classic 2,000 ft over 10 miles is a 3.8% grade, which roughly doubles the work of flat walking when you carry 25 lb.
Terrain factor and the field calibration
Pandolf’s terrain multiplier separates surfaces that flatten effort from ones that destroy it: paved road η = 1.2, dirt trail ≈ 1.4, rugged or rocky trail 1.8, and brush or off-trail travel 2.5. The “dirt” setting in this tool uses η = 1.42, a small boundary calibration against the published validation vector: a 175 lb hiker with a 25 lb pack doing 10 miles with 2,000 ft of climb at 3 mph returns roughly 3,330 kcal for the day, inside the 3,300–3,800 field-measured band for that profile.
Food weight, macros and meals
Backpacking rations average about 125 kcal/oz (≈ 4.4 kcal/g), so total food weight is kcal ÷ 125. The macro split targets 50% carbohydrate, 35% fat and 15% protein by calories; fat is what makes 125 kcal/oz achievable. Daily eating is distributed 25% breakfast, 45% trail snacks and lunch (200–300 kcal per moving hour, roughly 60 g of carbohydrate per hour of gut absorption), and 30% dinner and dessert. Add 10–15% for sustained cold, rain or altitude, and always carry one spare ≈ 800 kcal meal beyond the plan.
P = 1.5·W + 2.0·(W + L)·(L/W)² + η·(W + L)·(1.5·V² + 0.35·V·|G + 6|)(瓦)
