Emergency Trip Plan Builder
Route, party, vehicle and check-in time — a printable SAR brief you can leave behind.
How the trip plan builder works
Search-and-rescue teams describe the first hours of a mission as an information race. A written plan is not paperwork — it is the single highest-leverage safety item you can prepare before leaving pavement, especially when travelling solo.
What a SAR planner actually needs
The form mirrors the questions an incident commander asks first. Route means trail name, key junctions, turnaround point and distance, not “the mountains”. The trailhead field and the vehicle field (make, color, plate and exact parking spot) let responders find the car quickly — the car is usually the last known point. Start, planned return and a check-in deadline bracket the timeline; the deadline must be phrased “if not back by…”. The party roster records names, phone numbers and medical notes (allergies, medications, conditions) because those change triage and medication decisions. Clothing and pack colors, plus notable gear such as tent color or a satellite messenger, tell air search what to look for.
The overdue protocol
The plan only works if the contact knows the rules. At the deadline, the named person waits 0 minutes and calls rangers or emergency services (911 / 112 / 120). Exactly one designated reporter talks to dispatch and relays updates. They give dispatch the whole picture — the trip plan, last known point, vehicle and plate, party size with medical notes, and clothing and tent colors. Friends must not self-organize a search; informal night searches repeatedly create additional victims. The printed brief stays visible on the dashboard with a photo on the contact’s phone, and whenever the plan changes — later return, new route, extra person — the contact is told before the change, not after.
Print, copy and email — nothing uploaded
Everything stays in this browser. The Print button produces a clean SAR brief for the dashboard and the registration box where one exists; Copy plan text puts the whole brief on the clipboard; Email opens the default mail client with the plan in the message body (if the contact field contains an email address, it is pre-filled). State persists locally so multi-day planning survives a closed tab, and the plain-text summary is also what the share and copy-result buttons use.
