CPR & Severe Bleeding Metronome

100–120 compression cadence, 30:2 cycles and a tourniquet timer — calm prompts under stress.

How to use the CPR and bleeding metronome

In a cardiac arrest or severe hemorrhage, the first three minutes decide the outcome. This tool removes the arithmetic and the clock-watching so you can focus on hands-on care: it beats at 110 compressions per minute, walks you through 30:2 cycles, and keeps a persistent tourniquet timer.

The CPR tab follows current American Heart Association and Red Cross sequencing. First make the scene safe — traffic, fire, water, electricity and weapons all create a second victim. Check responsiveness by tapping and shouting, then call emergency services and send a bystander for an AED. Open the airway with a head-tilt and check breathing for no more than ten seconds; occasional gasping, called agonal breathing, is not normal breathing. Then begin cycles of 30 compressions and 2 breaths. Press 5–6 cm (2–2.4 in) deep for adults, roughly one-third of the chest for children and infants, allow complete recoil, and keep pauses under ten seconds. The metronome tracks elapsed time, your position inside the cycle and completed cycles, and it requests a screen wake lock when the browser allows it so the phone does not sleep mid-resuscitation. With two trained rescuers treating a child or infant, the ratio changes to 15:2.

The severe bleeding tab implements the Stop the Bleed sequence: expose the wound, apply firm direct pressure with both hands and body weight, pack gauze into junctional wounds at the groin or armpit, and place a tourniquet 5–7 cm (2–3 inches) above a life-threatening limb wound. The tourniquet button stamps the application time into this device's local storage and keeps counting even after a page reload, because the receiving trauma team needs that number. Never loosen a tourniquet, write the time on the victim, and apply a second tourniquet just proximal to the first if bleeding continues.

The emergency tab displays the correct local number for your region and includes the sentence “I need an ambulance. Someone is unconscious and not breathing normally” in English, Chinese, Spanish and French, plus a location-reporting checklist: coordinates or trail marker, number of victims, mechanism, consciousness and breathing.

Why cadence and recoil matter

Blood flow during CPR is generated by the compression itself; rates below 100 per minute or incomplete chest release between presses sharply reduce coronary and brain perfusion. Fatigue degrades depth within two minutes, which is why rescuers should swap roles around that mark without a long pause. An AED used promptly dramatically improves survival — turn it on and simply follow the voice prompts while continuing CPR between analyses.

Frequently asked questions

What rate and depth should I use for CPR?
100–120 compressions per minute (the metronome uses 110), 5–6 cm (2–2.4 in) deep for adults and about one-third of the chest for children and infants. Let the chest fully recoil and keep interruptions minimal.
30:2 or 15:2 — which ratio applies?
Use 30 compressions to 2 breaths for all ages with one rescuer. Two rescuers use 15:2 only for a child or infant. For an adult stranger when you are unwilling to give breaths, continuous hands-only CPR is acceptable and far better than no CPR.
Do I loosen the tourniquet after an hour?
No. Never loosen or remove a tourniquet once it is applied; only the hospital team removes it. Record the time, write it on the victim, and add a second tourniquet just above the first if bleeding persists.
Can I use a belt or rope as an improvised tourniquet?
Avoid narrow belts, wire, string or rope — they cut tissue without compressing the artery. Use a purpose-made tourniquet or a wide band (at least 4 cm / 1.5 in) tightened with a windlass. Junctional wounds at the groin or armpit need wound packing instead.
What do I say when calling emergency services abroad?
Call 112 in the EU, 999 in the UK, 120 in mainland China (110 police), 119 in Japan, 000 in Australia and 911 in the US/Canada. Use speakerphone, give exact location first, then number of victims and their condition, and stay on the line. The Emergency call tab has the key phrase in four languages.
