Bite, Sting & Tick Aid
Snakebite do/don’t, tick removal with a Lyme watch timer, jellyfish, spiders and bee stings.
Field protocols behind this bite and sting tool
Venom and bites punish improvisation. Almost every harmful folk remedy — cutting a snakebite, burning a tick, pouring freshwater over jellyfish tentacles — actively makes the injury worse. Each tab here follows a single principle: slow what the venom or infection is doing, document time, and evacuate calmly.
Snakebite
Current poison-center guidance is pressure/immobilization by stillness rather than constriction. Move everyone at least three metres from the snake, remove rings and watches before swelling starts, splint the bitten limb at or slightly below heart level, and keep the victim lying down. Record the bite time because progression of symptoms guides treatment, and note the snake’s colour, pattern and head shape — or photograph it from distance. Do not wash the wound vigorously, because hospitals may swab venom residues to identify the species. Do not catch or kill the snake: even a severed head can bite reflexively for hours. In the US call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222; Australia uses 13 11 26; the UK uses NHS 111 or 999 in an emergency; the EU uses 112; mainland China uses 120.
Ticks and the 36–48 hour window
Borrelia bacteria that cause Lyme disease generally need 36–48 hours of attachment before transmission, which is why prompt mechanical removal matters: fine-tip tweezers at the skin line, straight upward pull, no twist, squeeze, heat or oil. Save the tick, mark the date, and use the built-in timer to track every recorded bite across page reloads. Most infectious ticks are poppy-seed nymphs, so do a full-body check, shower within two hours and tumble clothes on high heat for ten minutes. An expanding bullseye rash, fever or flu-like illness within days to weeks means a medical visit — not self-prescribed antibiotics.
Bees, spiders and jellyfish
For bee stings scrape the stinger out sideways in the first seconds; systemic signs (throat tightness, wheeze, hives beyond the site, facial swelling) mean epinephrine in the outer thigh, EMS, and lying flat with legs raised. Spider and scorpion care is mostly wash, cool compress, tetanus check and monitoring, with specific evacuation triggers for black widow cramps, recluse ulcers and bark scorpion stings in children. Jellyfish stings need vinegar for at least 30 seconds before tentacle removal and hot-water immersion at 40–45 °C — freshwater, urine, alcohol and ice all discharge more stinging cells.
