Hike Time & Pace Planner
Naismith and Tobler with terrain, group and pack corrections — fast, normal and conservative estimates with ETAs and a daylight buffer.
How the hike time calculator works
Most hikers underestimate the clock because they divide map distance by a flat-ground speed and ignore vertical gain. This planner starts from published walking rules, then adjusts for the ground, the group and the weight on your back — and finally checks the plan against available daylight.
Three bands, one trip
The normal band is the U.S. presentation of Naismith's rule: 20 minutes per mile plus 30 minutes per 1,000 feet of climb (and a modest 10 minutes per 1,000 feet of descent when you enter it). That is why the textbook vector works: 3 miles (60 minutes) plus 2,000 feet of climbing (60 minutes) equals exactly 2 hours. The fast band models a fit, unburdened party at 20 minutes per mile on the flat with 20 minutes per 1,000 feet of climb. The conservative band is traditional book time: 30 minutes per mile, 45 minutes per 1,000 feet of climb and 15 per 1,000 lost, matching the pace of an average loaded group that SAR statistics suggest is the honest number to give a waiting contact.
Multipliers and rest
Every elevation-adjusted base time is multiplied by terrain (good trail ×1.0, rough trail ×1.25, off-trail or scree ×1.5), group (fit solo ×1.0, mixed ability ×1.15, family or beginners ×1.30) and pack weight (light ×1.0, standard ×1.08, heavy winter load ×1.15). Your planned rest minutes are added only after the multipliers, and the start time produces an ETA for each band, flagged with “+1d” if it crosses midnight.
The daylight model
With latitude and date, the planner uses the Forsythe et al. (1995) astronomical model. Solar declination is δ = 0.4093·sin(2πN/365 − 1.405) in radians, where N is the day of year; day length is 24/π·acos((sin(−0.833°) − sinφ·sinδ)/(cosφ·cosδ)) hours, with a second run at −6° for civil twilight. At 45° latitude on June 21 (N = 172) this returns about 15.6 hours. The verdict turns to a warning whenever conservative book time exceeds day length minus a one-hour buffer — the margin that keeps a slow finish from becoming a benightment callout.
